{ Lab Architecture, Physical Sciences, Public Spaces & Office Environments }

Innovators of the electronic ink used in the Kindle, E Ink expanded their R&D capability with a move to Billerica MA and the creation of a new headquarters. Located in an existing 140,000sf shell/core office building, the project entailed the creation of high performance chemistry, physics, engineering, analytical and industrial process R&D labs. We teamed with IFDI and were engaged to provide lab planning and design services. Conceived as an integrated collection of disparate sciences, the laboratories are linked along axial corridors that converge on E-Square,a glassy communication space linking to the office floor above. The eastern half of the building is dedicated to industrially scaled chemistry labs, with a dense pattern of bench top fume hoods and large walk-in hoods. The western half of the building is dedicated to analytical labs, stability labs, a pilot plant, cleanroom and electronics laboratories. The laboratories were designed as easily reconfigurable workspaces with moveable laboratory tables and overhead services.
