Boston Living With Water Competition

2015

Planning & Programming

{ Public Spaces & Office Environments }

Boston Living with Water was an international competition focused on developing resilient solutions to climate change. Encompassing three sites, it encouraged designers to envision new solutions at a variety of scales.

The first place award winner in the Site One, Prince Building competition, LAB’s entry challenged the common approach of retreat and encirclement and proposed an innovative strategy to create a new urban coastal building type. Our coastline has been shaped continuously over time by both the city and nature. Rather than retreat, we looked at this challenge as an opportunity to shape a new mode of living and a new engagement with the shoreline. Using the piers as an inspiration, we studied how to use the concept of new structures as a way of protecting and providing amenities to the existing building.
